An enigmatic death

Yvonne had just logged onto her email when DCI Llewelyn came to find her in CID primary office. "There you are."

"Sorry, sir, I meant to pop in and see you. I've been catching up with the team. I-"

"It's okay." He held up his hand. "That's not why I was trying to find you."

"Oh, okay. Is something wrong?" She stood to meet him.

"I've just had a call from MIT in Edinburgh."

"Have you?" She frowned, her heart thumping. "It's not Tasha. Is she-"

"No, nothing like that. They've had another death, and they think it's related to the case you were helping on. The circumstances are strange, apparently. It's not a straight-forward scene, or connection. They have asked me if I would release you, so you can continue working with them. The SIO is extremely grateful for your input."

"I see." She searched his face. "What did you say?"

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I said I couldn't speak for you, and that I would speak to you about it. Under the circumstances, you could rejoin their team on a secondment, Yvonne, if you want to. I will not direct you to. This has to be your decision, but I will remind you to exercise caution if you go back. Don't take the case personally, or put yourself in harm's way. Other than that, your are free to go back to Edinburgh if you want to. I would agree to four weeks, initially, extended to six weeks if deemed necessary. I think that should give you ample time to help the investigation move forward."

"Right."

"Do you need time to think it over? I said I would get back to them this afternoon but, if you need more time-"

"Can I get back to you after lunch, sir?" She scratched her head. "I've a few things I need to get in order."

He nodded. "Of course. I'll speak to you later, Yvonne." He headed for the door, but swung back towards her. "I forgot to say welcome back."

Dewi came to her side, eyebrows raised. "The Yvonne I know would have bitten his hand off."

She sighed. "Under normal circumstances, I would have. I'm concerned about the vans marauding our villages."

"You can leave those to me." He puffed out his chest. "And, if it gets on top of me, I can ask the DCI to pull his finger out."

She laughed, hands on hips. "Oh Dewi, I can always rely on you to cheer me up."
